Living in a small space can feel like a constant Tetris game. But don't despair! With a few clever tricks, you can maximize your square footage and create a home that feels spacious and inviting, even if you're living in a shoebox apartment.

Before we dig in I want to address the elephant in the room, STUFF! Commit to having less stuff in your house, office, and car. I agree with The Minimalists’ opinion that the less we own the easier it is to care for. Only own what you love and value.

1. Furniture That Multitasks:

• Behold the Ottoman! This versatile piece can function as extra seating, a coffee table, and even a storage bin. Amazon, At Home, and Target have many options. (I want one for dog toys!)

• Murphy Beds: If you’re in the market for a permanent solution, these space-saving sleep surfaces disappear into the wall when not in use.This frees up valuable floor space. I haven’t been able to get my significant other to agree to this for the guest room yet but I'm working on it!

• Lift-Top Coffee Tables: These tables have hidden storage compartments for books, games, or blankets. We have a coffee table with storage drawers and it hold all our games.

2. Vertical Living:

• Shelving: Utilize every inch of wall space with shelves. Open shelving adds visual interest and makes it easy to display your favorite decor. You can get really creative with floating shelves.

• Hanging Storage: Install hooks and rails on walls to hang coats, bags, and even pots and pans.

  • Pegboards: Perfect for organizing tools, jewelry, or even kitchen utensils.

  • Magnetic strips: Keep knives, scissors, and other metal items organized and easily accessible.

  • Command hooks: Amazing for hanging a lot of things if you don’t want holes in the walls.

• Wall-Mounted Desks: Fold-down desks can be tucked away when not in use, perfect for a small home office.

3. Clever Storage Solutions:

• Underbed Storage: Utilize the space under your bed with rolling bins or drawers. Our bed frame has built-in drawers underneath; awesome idea!

• Over-the-Door Organizers: These are great for storing shoes, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. I have one in our coat closet for hats, scarves, and dog necessities.

• Stackable Containers: Use clear containers to store everything from pantry items to toys. Make sure to use labels to keep everything organized.

  • Make any cabinet a stackable space with free standing shelves.

4. Declutter Regularly:

• The "One In, One Out" Rule: For every new item you bring into your home, get rid of something old. I practice this almost every day!

• Regular Purges: Schedule regular decluttering sessions to prevent clutter from accumulating.

• Donate or Sell: Donate unwanted items to charity or sell them online. Have a donation bin handy in your house. I keep mine in my garage and drop-off on a regular basis. There are so many great charities that can make use of our old items.

5. Let There Be Light!

• Maximize Natural Light: Keep windows and blinds clean.

• Use Mirrors Strategically: Mirrors can make a room feel larger and brighter.

• Embrace Light Colors: Light colors on walls and floors will make your space feel more open and airy.

6. Zones of Organization:

• Create Designated Zones: Assign specific areas for specific activities. For example, a designated reading nook, a workspace, or a hobby corner.

• Utilize Corners: Don't neglect those awkward corners! Use corner shelves or rotating organizers to maximize space.

• Multi-Purpose Zones: Consider creating multi-purpose zones, such as a dining table that doubles as a workspace.

Living in a small space doesn't have to feel cramped. By implementing these space-saving tips, you can create a comfortable and stylish home that truly reflects your personality.
