How to Organize Pet Supplies: Create a Pet Station in Your Home

Many of us have pets or live in a household with pets, so how do we control the constant chaos of the toys, food, treats, and more? If you’re drowning in pet clutter, it’s time to declutter and get organized!

Step 1: Declutter Your Pet Supplies

Are you a fan of BarkBoxes and have toys everywhere? Start by decluttering and give yourself permission to let things go. Donate new toys your pets don’t play with and throw out the toys that are old and overused. It’ll be safer for you and your pets anyway!

Where to Donate Pet Items

Animal shelters love toys and excess pet items. If you have extra bedding, towels, and sheets, they will also take those. Decluttering pet supplies not only helps your home but also supports animals in need.

My husband and I have two dogs, and even though they’re small, they have a lot of stuff! Laya is a miniature Australian Shepherd and Cooper is a pug. They are a hilarious brother-sister duo!

Step 2: Sort Pet Items by Category

After you’ve figured out what you’re going to keep, sort it all into different piles. Place like items with other like items, so for example: put the treats together, the food together, leashes and collars together, and costumes (if you have them). Do you have pet shampoo and conditioner, carpet cleaner, and stain remover (we do!)? Place those items in a pile as well.

Categories to organize:

  • Dog food and cat food
  • Pet treats
  • Leashes, collars, and harnesses
  • Pet toys
  • Grooming supplies (shampoo, brushes, nail clippers)
  • Pet medications and supplements
  • Cleaning supplies (stain remover, odor eliminator)
  • Pet accessories (costumes, bandanas, bowls)

Step 3: Create a Designated Pet Supply Station

After everything is sorted, then find and designate a specific area of your home so that these items are in a centralized location. The whole point is to declutter and then organize the best way you will use things in your home.

I’m not sure about you, but I love the idea of having everything in one place! However, depending on how your house is laid out, this might not be possible. In my next house, I would love to have a specific station or set of cabinets that can all be for all dog items.

Where to Store Pet Supplies in Your Home

When I go on large professional organizing jobs, there are specific stations for pet things. All of the food, treats, collars, and leashes go in the mudroom. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and when you use things, so you get to decide where you want items to belong.

Popular pet organization locations:

  • Mudroom: Perfect for leashes, collars, walking supplies
  • Kitchen or pantry: Ideal for food, treats, and feeding supplies
  • Bathroom or laundry room: Great for grooming supplies and cleaning products
  • Entryway: Convenient for grab-and-go items like leashes

In our household, the rack near the front door holds the collars and leashes. We have a shelf in our kitchen island that holds all of the dog treats and medicine. The pantry has dog food and overflow treats on the bottom shelf.

Step 4: Use Containers for Pet Organization

I almost forgot to talk about containers! In our pantry, we have specific containers or bins that hold the excess treats and small food items such as canned food. On the island shelf, medicines are in one container and treats get the rest of the shelf. By placing things in containers, it helps items stay in their designated areas and is visually more organized as well.

Best containers for pet supplies:

  • Airtight containers for dry food (keeps food fresh and prevents pests)
  • Clear bins for treats (easy to see what you have)
  • Small containers or baskets for medications
  • Labeled bins for toys by type or size
