Container Selection: The Key to Effective Organization

Choosing the right container is essential for a successful organizing project.

Whether you're decluttering your closet, organizing your pantry, or tidying up your workspace, the containers you select can significantly impact your ability to maintain order. Let’s look at some key factors to consider during container selection.

1. Purpose and Use:

  • Storage Purpose: Determine what you'll be storing. Containers for clothes, toys, or kitchen supplies will have different requirements.

  • Frequency of Use: If you use these items daily, opt for containers that are accessible and lidless. For less frequent use, sealed containers may be more suitable.

  • Size and Shape: Consider the size and shape of the items you'll be storing. Containers should be large enough to accommodate your belongings without being overly spacious. For example, I like tall, waterproof containers in my kitchen for spaghetti that will hold 2 boxes of spaghetti.

2. Material:

  • Material: Choose materials that are durable and suitable for your storage needs. For example, plastic containers are lightweight and versatile, while metal containers offer sturdiness and durability. I personally like fabric over metal framed containers for a closet because they can be sturdy and look natural.

3. Aesthetics:

  • Style: Select containers that complement your overall decor. With so many options from Target, Amazon, The Container Store and others, the possibilities are endless!

  • Color: Consider the color scheme of your space. Using containers that coordinate with your existing colors can enhance the visual appeal of your organized space.

4. Labels:

  • Labels: Use labels to identify the contents of each container. This will help you quickly find what you need and maintain order. I love using my label maker for many projects because it makes the space look polished and complete.

5. Space Considerations:

  • Available Space: Measure the area where you plan to store the containers to ensure they will fit properly. I cannot stress measuring enough. You can save yourself tons of time and money by measuring several times and buying once!

  • Stackability: If space is limited, choose containers that are stackable or can be nested together.

6. Budget:

  • Cost: Set a budget for your organizing project. Factor in containers prices, labels, and dividers. Remember that the Dollar store might be perfect for your office organization goals and be much more affordable than office products from The Container Store.

  • Long-term Value: Investing in high-quality containers may be more cost-effective in the long run, as they are less likely to need replacing. This is an important factor in planning your space. I recently had the option to organize a pantry with either Dollar Store products or Container Store products. I recommended The Container Store goods due to long-term durability.

After considering the above factors, select containers that help you achieve and maintain a well-organized space. When choosing containers, pick ones not only aesthetically pleasing but ones aligning with your needs for the space.
